The majority of the Vista community uses alternative transportation to get to school, amounting to many thousands of trips each week. At market rate, the money (equivalent to over 16,000 full-time students' tuitions) will only buy a small number of parking spaces, which will have to be subsidized even though a fee is charged. Existing parking garages rarely if ever fill up. The City has a transit-first policy, yet has not truly implemented the many strategies which will reduce driving trips to downtown and thereby improve everything about downtown. In contrast, the money is more than enough to implement a Class Pass program, giving free bus passes to Vista students. Vista is on a Bicycle Boulevard yet nothing has been done to implement it. Vista bike parking is often full. Many Vista students can't afford a car, let alone the parking fees. Vista is very close to BART and the main AC Transit hub -- our scarce Vista dollars should go towards helping us get to campus and making the City a better place. Let's do something for the long-term good and health of Berkeley, by using Vista transportation funds to make it easier, cheaper and safer to get to Vista for the long-term, rather than taking up valuable city space with parking garages. Sincerely, CC: Vista College Administration Berkeley Transportation Commission, 2118 Milvia St, Suite 300, Berkeley, CA 94704, FAX: (510) 883-6565 Berkeley Ecological and Safe Transportation Coalition (BEST) http://www.berkeleybest.org/ Bicycle Civil Liberties Union, http://www.bclu.org/ After you click to send, PLEASE WAIT for the form to finish.
