The Remember Bliss Campaign

MISSION

The Remember Bliss Campaign takes it as self-evident that all automobile deaths are avoidable because there are better alternatives to the automobile.

Even given this automobile dominated system, the suffering and death which has occurred could and should have been greatly reduced.

The problem of automobile fatalities stems from many factors. Unsafe cars, speeding, drunk driving, overly lax driver's education requirements, dangerous design of roads and intersections, lack of consideration for pedestrians and bicyclists by planners and funders, the billions per year spent on advertising to convince the public that cars are important and necessary, the rise of road rage as a social disease, and just the sheer momentum of institutionalized reliance on the automobile -- that so much of our lives are now spent behind the wheel -- are just some of the primary causes of this epidemic.

All of these and many more factors need to be addressed if we are to stem the tide of tragedy. The founders of the Remember Bliss campaign encourage all groups working on this problem from any perspective to join together and find our common ground.

Our goal is to bring attention to the epidemic of suffering and death which has been brought on by the age of the automobile, that with awareness a sea change may be precipitated, and that the public at large will be more aware of options as crises give opportunity to new directions (such as climate change, peak oil, and more).

Rememberbliss.org is a memorial not only to all those innocent lives which have been lost, but also to the way of life and potential future ways of life which were lost with the advent of the automobile and its meteoric rise to dominance.

The hundredth anniversary of the first death by automobile was the spark that started this project, but we intend to develop this project and continue to hold vigils, arts and actions across the continent on September 13th of every year.

We are working now on a mechanism for donations and have set up a listserv to help us coordinate on the continental scale.
